This programme is about engaging men and boys in gender based violence and HIV as partners . A need to work with men in addressing Gender Based Violence and HIV is driven by recognition that these dual epidemics are rooted in the way that boys and girls are socialized.
For change to happen, we need to challenge fundamental constructions about masculinity and feminity in our society. Men and boys are primarily responsible for violence against women and they are therefore indispensable in the struggle to end it.
Not all men are violent and /or gender insensitive. In uncovering the reasons for the unabated rise in gender violence, attention should not be focused on blaming men but on uncovering societal factors that are responsible for fueling the war between men and women.
Most importantly, working with men should also create space for them to speak out about the challenges that they face as men as a result of their own conditioning. Workshops are conducted and Supports groups established for men to discuss own issues. The Brothers for Life Toolkit shall also be used as our Peer Educators have been trained on the use of the programme.
